Why replace the ignition /contact breaker system?

Our kit includes detailed instructions and installation diagrams including specially prepared terminated cables that make installation very simple for even the most inexperienced owner. In every case, they can easily be converted back to contact breakers as no permanent changes are made to the wiring and there is no cutting or joining of cables.


Even if you don’t use your Messerschmitt, it still needs maintenance and that includes the contact breakers. Annual maintenance, regardless of miles driven, should include removing and cleaning the contact breakers and especially lubricating the cam with special grease (available from Partsmart).
Original cams are often very worn requiring frequent adjustment as they cause rapid wear on the contact breaker heel. In many cases, the reverse timing point may be impossible to achieve even with a very small gap. In this case, an expensive rebuild can be delayed or avoided by fitting one of the contactless ignition systems that are available for the Sachs 200 AZL-R. Reverse timing is very accurate as the impulse sender unit is attached to the worn cam and gives a precise timing point for clockwise (reverse) rotation.
The Hall sensor switches every time the magnet passes charging the coil until the trigger point is reached when it switches off very suddenly and less delay than the contact breaker. A power transistor does the switching so there are no moving parts. It is also less sensitive to voltage drop so easier starting and smoother idle are an added benefit. Smoother idle also means that it is possible to significantly decrease the idle speed that will help when changing up gears.
In every case, they can easily be converted back to contact breakers as no permanent changes are made to the wiring. It’s simply a case of removing the contact breaker plate and inserting the electronic module using the existing timing cables. Other changes are completed in the black box using the cables provided.
