FMR#1853 c/w boundary wire "as original" £45.00 (0298) Bosch Carbon Brushes new UK Stock. Better value pattern brush as club part £29.19 also available at Schmittparts (club price £41.31) Note that the terminals can be assembled as on this photo of original Bosch brushes. Terminal tag needs to be adjacent to the holder to ensure that the brush 'pigtail' cannot make contact with the inner hub of the flywheel. If that happens it often destroys the entire dynastart...!

Brush fitting and Bosch dynastart rebuild
With all now more than 60 years old, most dynastarts need a full overhaul as part of the brush service plan as detailed in the Messerschmitt workshop maintenance schedule. Our cars were built in an era of cheap labour and the Messerschmitt requires removal of the entire motor / gearbox unit to service the dynastart so there was little, or no consideration given to service time. Many owners avoid this skilled task waiting until the red ignition warning light remains on indicating that the charging system has failed. This is a significant mistake as serious damage can result by ignoring the essential maintenance. Brushes need to be changed when they are worn down to a measured length of 11mm but, if ignored, will continue to operate until the brush wire makes contact with the commutator surface causing damage that may render the unit beyond repair.
When servicing the flywheel / armature, all carbon dust must be removed. With Messerschmitts often standing for many years unused this carbon deposit can be come embedded in the windings ultimately causing a short circuit - in many cases with irreparable damage.
Schmittparts is proud to offer original equipment brushes from the renowned German supplier MEGA. Schmidthammer Elektrokohle GmbH was founded in 1918 by Leonhard Schmidthammer and now trades as MEGA. This long history included supplying original equipment brushes to both Bosch and Siba and they are now part of a diminishing number of historic original suppliers of critical Messerschmitt parts.
Fitting brushes requires great care as expensive mistakes can cost well into 4 figures to repair. Photos show one of our rebuilt dynastart units with new MEGA brushes fitted. Note how the brush wires are fitted close to the holders and in such a way that the brushes cannot come out or contact the rotating inner hub of the flywheel. All contact parts are carefully cleaned and this unit has been treated with professional insulating varnish to ensure long life.
